Dried Orange Rind (Ju Hong) is the dried outer peel of the highly acidic orange, which is grown and cultivated across the globe. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is used widely for its properties.
Ju Hong is the outer layer of the peel only, with the white pith removed, which makes it sharper and more aromatic than the full peel. It is closely related to Dried Orange Peel (Chen Pi), and sits alongside Dried Citrus Seeds (Ju He) and Dried Buddha's Hand (Fo Shou) in our citrus range.
They can be used in a number of culinary dishes.
Aromatic: Ju Hong has a bright, pronounced citrus character, sharper than the full peel because the pith has been removed.
Digestive Comfort: Traditionally added to rich or heavy meals, where its warming, slightly bitter nature is valued.
Balance: Included in traditional blends intended to potentially encourage a sense of natural equilibrium.
Natural Compounds: Citrus peel contains naturally occurring essential oils, which give it its distinctive fragrance.
Versatile: Suits infusions, braises, and spice blends alike.
We recommend around 5g per portion.
For tea, steep a piece in hot water for five to ten minutes, or simmer longer for a fuller, more bitter brew. In cooking, add it at the start of a soup or braise so the aroma has time to come through, then lift it out before serving if you prefer. It can also be ground to a powder for spice blends.
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
