Chai Hu is the dried root of Bupleurum chinense DC., known as Thorowax Root or Hare's Ear Root. Widely referenced in classical Chinese herbal texts, it is traditionally included in blends associated with the Shao Yang pattern and Qi regulation. Cultivated according to the DaoDi principle, this herb is grown in its origin region and harvested at peak potency, then naturally dried.
Our Chai Hu is sourced from Hebei, Henan and Liaoning, and processed in GMP-certified facilities so that each batch is fully traceable and meets EU and UK safety standards.
This 500g pack is the dispensary size, intended for practices that use Chai Hu regularly rather than occasionally.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, herbs are described by temperature, flavour and the meridians they are associated with rather than by any single active compound. Chai Hu is classified as follows:
Chai Hu is almost never dispensed alone. It appears as the chief herb in several of the best known classical formulas, usually alongside the herbs listed below.
Keep sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. With a pack this size, decanting working quantities into a smaller container keeps the bulk material sealed for longer.
If you need a smaller quantity, the same material is stocked in a 100g pack:
Chai Hu is the chief herb in Xiao Yao San, one of the most widely used classical formulas. Most of the other herbs in it are stocked here in matching 500g packs:
Chai Hu and Bai Shao also appear together in Si Ni San, a shorter four-herb formula.

At Vita Herbal Nutrition, we are committed to providing the highest quality herbs, carefully selected and prepared without compromise.
Our herbs are 100% free from sulphur treatment. Sulphur is widely used in the industry to improve appearance and extend shelf life, but it alters the natural composition of the herb and may cause allergic reactions in some individuals. You can read more on our non-sulphur treated herbs page.
We source only DaoDi-grown Chinese herbs from clean, sustainable environments. Our long-standing relationships with growers allow us to select material from its ideal growing region, harvested at the right time.
