Ginseng can be purchased in a variety of forms (Chinese, American & Korean) and has been held in the highest regard by Eastern medical professionals for hundreds of years. Here's how to brew this ancient herb into a simple, warming tea...
What is Ginseng Root Tea?
Ginseng root tea is one of the oldest and most traditional ways to enjoy this prized herb. The dried root is simmered gently in water, releasing its distinctive earthy, slightly bitter character with a faintly sweet finish. In Chinese tradition it is a drink for slow mornings and cold days, taken on its own or rounded out with a few storecupboard herbs.
Simple Ginseng Root Tea
What You'll Need (1 serving)
- 5g dried sliced ginseng (Ren Shen)
- 500ml water
- Honey to taste (optional)
Method
- Rinse the ginseng slices briefly to remove any dust.
- Add the slices to a small pot with the water and bring to a gentle simmer.
- Cover and simmer on low heat for 20 to 30 minutes. The longer it simmers, the fuller the flavour.
- Strain into a cup and add honey to taste if you like it sweeter.
- Serve and enjoy! The same slices can usually be simmered a second time for a milder cup.
Make It Your Own
Ginseng blends naturally with the classic tonic ingredients. Try adding a few goji berries (Gou Qi Zi) or a couple of jujube dates (Hong Zao) in the final ten minutes of simmering for natural sweetness, or a slice of dried ginger (Gan Jiang) for extra warmth.
Short on time? Ginseng concentrated granules dissolve in hot water in seconds, with no simmering or straining.

Which Ginseng Should I Use?
The main types are traditionally described differently. Asian ginseng (Ren Shen) is regarded as the warmer, more stimulating root, while American ginseng (Xi Yang Shen) is considered cooler and gentler. Red ginseng (Hong Shen) is Asian ginseng that has been steamed before drying, giving it a warmer traditional classification still.
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking regular medication, speak to your GP or a qualified practitioner before adding ginseng to your routine.
