About

Dang Gui, known in English as Chinese Angelica Root, is one of the most widely used herbs in the Chinese herbal tradition. It comes from the root of Angelica sinensis, a member of the carrot family cultivated in the cooler highland provinces of China, where the root is lifted, cleaned and sliced before drying.

This 100g pack is the sliced root, ready for simmering. It is a practical size for occasional use, whether you are brewing herbal infusions or adding it to broths and soups.

Potential Benefits

  • Warming: Dang Gui is described in traditional texts as a warming herb, and is most often used in the colder months.
  • Traditional Heritage: It is one of the four herbs in Si Wu Tang, a classical formula recorded in Chinese herbal literature for centuries.
  • Balance: In traditional practice it belongs to the group of herbs associated with nourishment and balance.
  • Aromatic: The root has a warm, musky, slightly sweet aroma that carries well into a long simmer.
  • Versatile: It suits herbal infusions, stocks, broths and slow-cooked dishes, and combines readily with other dried herbs.

Recommended Dosage

Simmer approximately 10g in water for 30 to 45 minutes, then strain and drink warm. It pairs well with red dates, goji berries and astragalus.

Store the pack sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Important: Dang Gui should be avoided during pregnancy. If you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, or any prescribed medication, speak to your doctor or a qualified practitioner before use.

FAQ

Is Dang Gui suitable for everyone?
No. It should be avoided during pregnancy. If you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, or any other prescribed medication, check with your doctor or a qualified practitioner first.

How does Dang Gui taste?
It has a warm, slightly sweet, musky flavour with a deep earthy undertone, distinct but pleasant when brewed.

How do I prepare it?
Simmer around 10g in water for 30 to 45 minutes and strain. The slices can also be added directly to stocks, broths and slow-cooked dishes.

Can I combine it with other herbs?
Yes. It is commonly simmered alongside red dates, goji berries or astragalus, and forms part of the Si Wu Tang grouping listed above.

What is the difference between the 100g and 500g packs?
Only the quantity. Both are the same sliced root, so the 500g pack is simply the bulk option.

Is this the same as Bai Zhi?
No. Both are Angelica species, but Dang Gui is Angelica sinensis and Bai Zhi is Angelica dahurica. They are treated as separate herbs in traditional practice.
