About

Dried cinnamon bark, known as Rou Gui or Cinnamomum cassia, has been valued for centuries for its rich aroma and warming character. Its deep, woody sweetness makes it one of the most recognisable spices in both the Chinese kitchen and the herbal tradition.

This 100g bottle contains concentrated granules rather than bark sticks, so it dissolves in hot water in seconds.

At Vita, we supply concentrated herbal granules for people who do not have time to decoct Chinese herbs traditionally.

Unlike other brands, our herbal granules are produced using state-of-the-art spray drying technology, meaning a purer end product and a 2 to 3 times higher concentration.

Potential Benefits

  • Warming: In traditional classification Rou Gui is described as hot, and it sits among the warmest herbs in the materia medica.
  • Traditional Heritage: Cinnamon bark is one of the oldest recorded spices, used in Chinese herbal practice and cooking for centuries.
  • Aromatic: The scent is deep, spicy and unmistakable, and comes through immediately in hot water.
  • Naturally Sweet: It carries a woody sweetness that needs nothing added.
  • Versatile: The granules dissolve straight into hot drinks and combine readily with other granules in a blend.

Preparation

Concentrated granules are made by simmering the raw herb, filtering the liquid, then drying it into a soluble powder. There is no simmering or straining.

  1. Measure out your usual amount, or the amount specified by your practitioner.
  2. Add hot water.
  3. Stir until fully dissolved.
  4. Drink while warm.

Because the granules are concentrated, the quantity needed is much smaller than for the whole bark, and the flavour is considerably stronger. Follow your practitioner's guidance on quantity rather than measuring by eye.

Keep the bottle sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Granules absorb moisture readily, so replace the lid promptly and avoid using a wet spoon.

If you want cinnamon sticks for baking, mulled wine, potpourri or decoration, you need the whole dried bark rather than the granules. Both sizes are listed below.

Important: Rou Gui is a strongly warming herb and is best used in moderation rather than freely. If you are pregnant, taking prescribed medication, or have any existing health condition, check with your doctor or a qualified practitioner before use.

At Vita Herbal Nutrition, we are dedicated to offering only the highest quality herbs, carefully selected and prepared without compromise.

We proudly offer a 100% sulphur-free range of herbs. Sulphur is widely used in the industry to improve appearance and extend shelf life, but it alters the natural composition of the herb and may cause allergic reactions in some individuals. You can read more on our non-sulphur treated herbs page.

We exclusively source DaoDi-grown Chinese herbs, cultivated in clean, sustainable environments. Thanks to grower partnerships formed since 2010, we select herbs from their ideal growing regions, harvested at the right time. FAQ

How do I use the granules?
Measure out your amount, add hot water, and stir until dissolved. Nothing needs simmering or straining.

How much should I use?
Follow the amount specified by your practitioner. Granules are concentrated, so the quantity is much smaller than you would use of the whole bark.

Is it the same as regular cinnamon?
Rou Gui is Chinese cassia cinnamon, stronger in aroma and richer and earthier in flavour than the milder Ceylon cinnamon sold as a baking spice.

Can I combine it with other herbs?
Yes. It is often paired with ginger, angelica root or goji berries in traditional recipes.

What is the difference between the granules and the bark?
The granules are a concentrated extract that dissolves in hot water. The whole bark can be simmered, baked with, or used as a stirring stick.

Is your cinnamon sustainably sourced?
Yes. Our Rou Gui is DaoDi-grown and responsibly harvested.
