About

Dried Peppermint, known as Bo He, is the dried aerial parts of Mentha haplocalyx, the mint traditionally used in Chinese herbal practice. The leaves and stems are harvested in summer when the aroma is at its strongest, then shade dried to hold on to the volatile oils that give the herb its unmistakable scent.

Bo He has a fresh, cooling character and a sharp minty aroma that carries into any infusion within seconds. It is one of the most approachable herbs in the range, familiar enough for everyday tea drinking while still holding a firm place in classical Chinese preparations.

It is classically combined with Dried Chrysanthemum Flowers (Ju Hua), Dried Mulberry Leaf (Sang Ye), and Dried Honeysuckle Flower (Jin Yin Hua) in cooling preparations.

Potential Benefits

Cooling: In traditional classification Bo He is described as cool and acrid, and it has long been favoured in the warmer months.

Aromatic: The volatile oils in the leaf give a bright, clean scent that lifts any blend it joins.

Traditional Heritage: Peppermint has been part of Chinese herbal practice for centuries and appears in several well known classical combinations.

Refreshing: Its crisp character is why mint infusions are so often enjoyed after meals as part of a balanced routine.

Versatile: Suits teas hot or iced, blends with other florals and leaves, and works as a finishing herb in cooking.

Recommended Dosage

We recommend around 5g per portion.

Unlike roots and barks, Bo He should not be simmered for long. Steep the dried leaf in freshly boiled water for five minutes, then strain. If you are adding it to a decoction of firmer herbs, add it in the final few minutes only, as prolonged boiling drives off the aromatic oils.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking regular medication, speak to a healthcare professional before use.

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Leafy herbs lose their aroma faster than roots, so keep the pack well sealed once opened.

What to Brew It With

Bo He is rarely used alone in traditional preparations. These are the herbs it most often appears alongside:
